All Members are welcome to send in sea stories and pictures

This blog won't be much fun if its just me talking about scraping blocks and what dates we will be doing it, so I would like to welcome all members to share there sea stories and pictures and have them posted on this blog. Send them to me at captain@michiganmaritimemuseum.org, or if they are related to a existing post attach them to the "comments", and please remember there are some stories that should stay on board.

These are pictures from this falls race with the Madeline. The race was held in between storms in variable winds and the Friends Good Will won by about 20 minutes. Good practice for next years Chicago to Mackinac race.

The next step in the development of our volunteer program

In an effort to make more efficient use of your time and skills and offer more stability to this program we are developing a system of committees to assist the Museum with operations and planning for the Friends Good Will. The long term goal of this is to create a self sustaining volunteer program. A program that is organized, open to the involvement of new volunteers and offers the opportunity to become more involved in guiding its future.

At this time we are considering 4 committees and a list of there areas of responsibilities.

Operations:

Crew scheduling

General administrative functions such as keeping a record of CPR qualification and volunteer hours

Coordinating car pools for crew changes on port visits

Maintenance:

Rigging, hull, electrical, engine and other systems
including record keeping, scheduling related work sessions and developing a long term maintenance plan and budget.

Opportunities:

Fund Raising

Port Visits

Program Development

Training:

Sail Training, to include scheduling instructors, trainees and classes

Maintaining records

Reviewing the previous year and finding ways to improve the program

These groups are still under development and your comments are welcome. Those interested in becoming involved in this process and serving on a committee, the sooner you contact me the more of an effect your ideas and actions will have on the finished product.

December 6th

Hope Card died today, she was surrounded by family, sending her off with love. I am glad to have known her. I enjoy reflecting on the conversations we shared while sitting on the dock in between sails on summer evenings. Happiness, strong opinions, a passion for her hobbies. I have always smiled when I talked to Hope, I smile now when I think of her.

The Board and the Staff of the Michigan Maritime Museum is greatly saddened by the passing of Hope Card. She was a dedicated volunteer as both a docent and a member of the ships company. Hope was always ready to lend a helping hand and was a friend to all. Her smile will be a treasure we will keep in our hearts.
